About IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English proficiency test designed for individuals seeking to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. It evaluates four fundamental language skills i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Types of IELTS

IELTS is available in two distinct formats

  • IELTS Academic – Intended for students applying to universities, higher education
    institutions.
  • IELTS General Training –Designed for professionals or individuals migrating to English-
    speaking countries or seeking employment opportunities abroad.

Test Format

The IELTS test is divided into four sections, each assessing a different aspect of language proficiency.

1. Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)

  •  Comprises four sections with a total of 40 questions assessing how well you understand ideas, recognise opinions.
  •  Features a mix of monologues and conversations spoken in various English accents.
  • Question types include multiple choice, matching, form completion, note-taking, and labelling diagrams.

2. Reading (60 minutes)

  •  Includes 40 questions assessing comprehension, skimming, and analytical skills.
  •  IELTS Academic: Three long passages derived from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.
  •  IELTS General Training: Three sections containing a mix of everyday materials such as advertisements, notices, and workplace-related texts.
  •  Common question types: True/False/Not Given, Matching Headings, Summary Completion, Sentence Completion, and Diagram Labelling.

3. Writing (60 minutes)

Academic Module:

  •  Task 1 (150 words): Interpretation of a visual representation such as a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map.
  • Task 2 (250 words): Discursive essay responding to a given prompt, requiringargumentation, evaluation, and critical analysis.

General Training Module:

  • Task 1 (150 words): Letter writing in a formal, semi-formal, or informal tone, depending on the scenario provided.
  • Task 2 (250 words): Opinion-based or problem-solving essay, structured similarly to the Academic module.

4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)

 The speaking test is conducted in a face-to-face format with an examiner and is divided into three parts:

  • Part 1 (4–5 minutes): Introduction and general questions on familiar topics such as hobbies, work, family, and daily life.
  • Part 2 (3–4 minutes): Cue Card Task – The candidate receives a topic and has 1 minute for preparation, followed by 2 minutes of continuous speech.
  • Part 3 (4–5 minutes): A discussion on abstract and opinion-based topics related to Part 2, requiring in-depth analysis and reason
